I guess that even though I do not officially study at university yet, I got on with my student life pretty well and pretty hard. So, the last four days was Catena Camp Out with all first years, called syears (sjaars). Catena is pretty much the sorority for the alternative, hippie, metal, random subculture happy student folks. My parents might have disagreed with me on going camping the day of my birthday, but who really cares about that! It just means another 364 days have past since you were born, nothing special at all. For me it just meant that 7647 days have passed since I came shooting out of my mother's vagina, nice thought.
There is not really much I can actually tell, I don't think you would be all that much interested in every little thing. So just a summarised version of the truth. The campsite was near Breda in Brabant, so we took the train and bus together and rolled out our mattresses and sleepingbags on the floor of a scout's building. We did some introduction games, so all syears got to know eachother. After that we were explained the rules of camping and dinner was made and eaten, followed by a long night at the campfire. Next day we went on a trading game in the city of Breda where we ending up trading a orange for something and ended up trading a goose statue for a bike. More dinner was served, which was in comparison to some student dinners really well made. At night we were supposed to do a Sphinx walk, but secretly it turned out to be a ghost walk. It was fun, but I am not easily scared. Next time I will pretend to be scared, because they really did a good job and it was freaking and bizar and well thought out. Also it was done in the dark, in one of those dunes near Breda, where there are no lights, just flowsticks on threes that you are supposed to follow and candle light.
Back at the campfire we were told that we missed the story behind one of the places we visited. Appearantly, the place they had parked a little tricycle was the place a dead girl was found, wrapped in a tapestry and till today nobody knows who she was and what had happened to her. She was known as the girl from Teteringen (dutch site). Me and some people I got close to stayed up till around four or five and went to bed, while some of the kampcies (camp comission) were worried about the space cake tripping people who were knocked out in their tents and sleeping bags in the hall.
For the last full day swimming was on the planning, somewhere in Breda. So we went with the bus together to pool and had fun with water and trying to fit everyone into a little pool. The girls won with 25 girls in the pool and 50 boobs in view. That night we had awesomely made couscous that tasted fucking great and an invitation to enjoying space cake. Unfortunately for the lack of experience I wasn't allowed to get space cake, so I wasn't on the list. On the other had, during the trading game a few girls had scored a free joint and I could join them, as blowing was allowed, even though I pretend to have used weed before. So after dinner and after the casino night and a strip act for a birthday boy, we decided to smoke the joint. It was fairly disappointing, all I got was cotton mouth and nothing more and the urge to sleep. So, no enjoyment for smoking weed for me it seems. On the other hand, I experienced other people getting high as fuck from the space cake. So I went to bed pretty early, 2am, and slept until 9, because we got woken and I had to help with breakfast. The only thing that was left was packing, cleaning and leaving the site.
Unfortunately, one girl had gone bad that night and that morning, she had fainted and couldn't stop shaking. I hope that she is ok, it is a sad thing that after three great days/nights something like that happens. We had to stay in so she wouldn't be stared at when she got taken by the ambulance. All left-over booze was auctioned off and I got a share in a hamstercake made for the birthdayboy from last night. It was time to leave, get the bus and train and off to home.
I am glad to be home, glad to have met so many great people, glad to know people with the same interests and same music taste. Now I got somebody to go with to Amanda Palmer in two weeks, this was the best idea ever!
