I have been a fan of several kinds of industrial music for a few years now but never realised its appeal that made me listen to this kind of music. The difference between Industrial and most kind of music is that it sounds so unearthly, so mechanic, that a lot of people are put off by the constant pounding of seemingly metal objects or oddly vibrating tube.
To me, industrial music is the expression of a feeling, or sometimes the expression of the time we are living in. When I listen to Nine Inch Nails I can hear the emotion in the grinding of metal, the synths, it is not the feeling of sad loves songs, angry rock tunes, it is the constant feeling of losing yourself, of losing that human part of yourself. It is the screaming to your enemies, your demons, in an abandoned city. It is the sound of a harsh and empty reality, the reality that enough of us live in, that we fight every day, because to others, the reality is the guitar and string filled universe of sad love songs and and up-tempo descriptions of the day. To me it is screaming to a concrete wall in a city without citizens.
Other time it is a reflection of this modern world, our need to push ourself so hard, to become one with our electronic devices, one with the world around us that gives us no break. It is the tube we take to work, the mindless brainwashing machine, the pre-recorded messages on help-lines of institutes, the one-mind track of society. It is the mainstream culture we live in, the critic view of what we have become when the industrial revolution made of individuals sheep and of one independent voice a one minded choir of ass lickers and chickens.
There are sure many more different ideas, styles, voices that I did not elaborate upon, but these are two distinct styles of industrial music that I listen to.
